When you consider Plato lived about 2450 years ago, you start to realize that the nature of civilization hasn't changed much.

Every civilization has it's rise, glory and fall. Every stinkin' last one of them. The hubris of people these days thinking that "it can't/won't happen here is astounding.
Modern empires won't fall the way they used to, though. The "average" person may not even notice the changing of the guard.
