On a completely unrelated note, how close is your field getting to being able to grow me a new optic nerve?:) I have a working eyeball, it just isn't hooked up! (Very irritating)
As for the optic nerve... Growing a new optic nerve is pretty far out unfortunately. Though we just started a new project designed to examine the optic nerves of glaucoma models and ganglion cell death (and the axonal damage/optic nerve damage) that occurs there is one of our interests.

That sucks. They can re-grow them in mice apparently.:P (That was actually a rather old story, 5+ years ago) Then again you should see some of the cell phone CPUs in my team's lab.
Both technologies will probably arrive to market at around the same time!
Damnit medical science needs to hurry up and figure out how to grow new nerve cells. That'll solve a huge range of issues.
