Journal ijustam's Journal: What to ask for in a F/OSS-based scholarship? 2

I have the opportunity to open a scholarship for students at a public American university. I'd like to focus the scholarship towards F/OSS oriented students. But what requirements do I ask for? Should students have already contributed to projects, or simply use F/OSS? I don't have a set amount of money in mind, so any range of ideas are welcome.

What to ask for in a F/OSS-based scholarship?

  • I would say that participation in an organized project would be a requirement. It's quite easy to be using open source software - hell - at least half of the firefox users probably don't know what open source means. And also by F/OSS do you mean "free or open source" software? That would make a free app like uTorrent and an open source app like Transmission equal requirement-wise. Just trying to understand the requirements. Either way, it would be wonderful if every university applauded the work of OSS deve
    • Good point re: uTorrent. The goal is primarily open source, but this brings up another question: how does one measure a contribution to a project? Do I ask for SVN revision logs? Sample code? Just trying to prevent people from adding a single print statement and claiming contributions.
