Unix Timeline

  • But the incarnations are variations on a few simple themes and packaging schemes.
One huge (though understandable) flaw in this is the comparison of Linux kernels with full-on distributions in the Solaris/OSX/*BSD corner.
  • This isn't just a timeline of all unix derivative systems, but of all also of all unix clones. Adding linux and other clones makes it substantially more complex. Linux doesn't share any code with unix (nevermind what sco would like to say). This also doesn't (and can't) track closed source uses of BSD code - Windows has big chunks of BSD (TCP/IP stack for a long time, maybe still), and who knows what else does.

Really cool chart though, good find!

What good is a ticket to the good life, if you can't find the entrance?
