Journal StalinsNotDead's Journal: OK Probably a stupid question 10

What in tarnation does the Z in ZOMG mean? Is the OMG part Oh My God? Sorry, I've never been terribly good at these newfangled acronyms.

For the record, I do use instant messaging. I do puncuate when using it. I rarely use these shortened forms.

OK Probably a stupid question

  • like how saying "OMG!!!111" or "teh" seems funny to repeat, sometimes.
    • I see. I was aware of teh and !!!!1111OneOne.

On a somewhat related note, I have a couple of acquaintances that routinely use things like LOL and ROTFLMAO. I was speaking with one of them and they told a joke. Without laughing I said "Roffle-Maow".

      Their response was "huh?"

You know. "Loll, That was a funny joke".
      • ZOMG is in the same family as PWNED
        • I also just interpreted the Z to be something along the lines of "Zowie" or "Zounds," which is always spoken in the voice of Ford Prefect. I also find it interesting when people say pwned. My stepsons pronounce it "P-owned" whereas I pronounce it "Owned". When I looked it up once it said that botrh pronunciations were OK, but the former was becoming more popular. *sigh*, now I know I'm getting old;-)
    • This is how I understood it.
  • Urban Dictionary says that it was simply a mistake, where someone meant to hit the shift key to type OMG and hit the Z key instead. It apparently caught on from there.

I always thought of it as a bastardized form of Valley Girl Speak, where the "like" wasn't aspirated and was eventually dropped. As in:

    It's like Oh My God...
    to
    "It's-k Oh My God..."
    to
    "Ts Oh My God..."
    to
    "Zoh my God..." (ZOMG)

As long as we're going to reinvent the wheel again, we might as well try making it round this time. - Mike Dennison
