Journal Rhoads47's Journal: Dealing With Domain Squatters 2

I'm developing a website and the domain that I want, like all other usable domain names, is currently registered by a domain squatter. The registrant has a multiple-year registration on this name and it expires in 10 months. I am afraid that if I convey my interest in the domain to the domain squatter that they will renew the domain indefinitely and only offer it to me for a price that is obscene. On the other hand, waiting 10 months to try to snatch the domain when it expires is also unattractive because of the chance that it'll be renewed and then I'll be right where I am today.

So I humbly ask the Slashdot community to share its experiences with dealing with domain squatters.

  • why bother to wait? find another domain you can live with, and use that one. there's a 30 day grace period for expiring domains, so unless you calculated the grace period, you're looking at an 11 month wait. you can also consider a domain hack(i.e. del.icio.us).

spend your time on content, not the domain.
  • they will renew the domain indefinitely

They'll do that anyway. As the guy above me said, get another domain name.
