Journal jklappenbach's Journal: Two Great Tastes That Should Go Together 1

Seems to me that the bittorrent protocol would fit nicely with apt-get and its analogs, especially around the time when distribution upgrades become available online. I'm taking a look at the current source for apt to see if there's a way it could be hooked in. I've searched for an existing solution, but perhaps my google-fu is not strong today. If anyone is aware of such a project, I would be interested in learning about it.

  • If you start with jigdo, it might be easier to get a handle on what's going on, especially as jigdo currently relies on wget for fetching the packages that make up the cd image (thus, create a standalone implementation of the protocol and tell jigdo to run that). Jigdo also isn't anywhere near as popular as apt, so it's an excellent proving ground for the technology.

If you intend to do it "for real" with apt-get though, you're going to really want to use a modified swarm client instead of the original BitT
