"I don't have to be connected to the internet for the VPN to work, do I?"

Well, yeah. But he was calling me from a hotel room somewhere, so...

(I actually have no flippin' idea where he was, 'cause he's in the middle of a month-long vacation. I'm pretty sure he wasn't trying to break our office's VPN distance record, though. That was access from near Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania... about 9.600 n. miles away [kls2.com].)
