Journal Em Emalb's Journal: man, this is cool.... 12

So, the company I work for now is roughly 1000 times smaller than the company I used to work for. No more giant undertakings to get an expense report in, I can simply walk over there and get it handled. No more waiting weeks for access to specific things, it's so simple.

It's very nice.

It's also nice to feel like everything I do makes a difference to this place, one of the reasons I was so burnt out was because I felt like no matter how many hours I worked, how hard I worked, or what I contributed, no one would care at my old work. So that's pretty awesome.

On a scale of 1-10, I'd say making this move to here is a solid 23.

How goes it this am* kids?

*for those in the US. For those in Europe/Aus/etc, happy afternoon.

  • My old consulting firm had a little more than 100 employees, so I knew everyone, EVERYONE at the company, and everyone knew me. They knew my strengths, my weaknesses, and placed me where my strengths would impress and I could learn my weaknesses better...

Only problem with small companies is getting promoted. I learned a crapload, but the only way I was getting promoted is when someone left the company. Not good for someone trying to get into management...
    • I've been mid-level management. It sucks, imo. But of course, that was with a large company.

It's really nice to go back to being just a simple ole Senior Engineer. :D

  • just change can be good. my last move was from smaller to bigger and there are so many nice things about it. i'm sure after i've been here a while, i'll see it differently. i've also (for the first time in 10 years) started thinking it would be nice to live somewhere with a greater variations in the seasons again. in other words - somewhere that actually gets cold in the winter.
  • I've worked for companies in the 20 range, in the 100-300 range, and the 60,000+ range. The 20 range is definitely the best environment, but also unfortunately the least stable, in so far as being in existence, bringing in revenue.

Then again, the two 20 companies I've worked for account for over half my work experience, while the 3 big companies are less than half. The small companies may be more likely to have money problems, but once you've proven your worth they're more likely to hold on to you.

  • Before I took my current job, I had the option of being paid more at a huge company where I would learn only their product but get corporate support experience, or being paid less at a medium company where I would learn a ton and get some (albeit much less) corporate support experience.

I went for the medium company, and doubt I'll regret it (haven't so far). It's a blast here, what I do matters, and the rest of the IT staff know a ton more than I do in their areas, so there's plenty to learn. No room for
  • i'm glad you're in a happy place.

Old programmers never die, they just hit account block limit.
