Journal cyranoVR's Journal: A New Era 7

Well, my employer got acquired. After the first of the year I'll be working for the largest stock exchange in the world.

I haven't been writing here much because I've been working like crazy. I still read Teh Journals on my Palm during my morning commute.

Still fencing. Even with about 5 weeks training I managed to earn national points in Richmond.

  • Not as much in the way of resources or benefits, but the work environment tends to be better. That's very subjective, though. I worked for a hedge fund for a while. That was a good environment, but not really what I wanted to be doing.
    • Earlier this year, the Home Despot bought three-quarters of my company. The other quarter wasn't at all any of their core competency, so they were spun off. After working for the Depot for a few months, I took a position at the smaller company. I agree with you about smaller companies. You can try out a lot more interesting things when you've got less resources - and with only a handful of people in the department, there's a lot of work that is spread around. I don't like that monster corporate culture that

  • i'm glad to hear that you're still fencing.
  • i'm working for a small company now (very java oriented...cool) but our customers are all the biggest financial firms and it is SO COOL working at those companies to see what's going on. some of them are just fucked up, but a lot of them are very impressive with what they accomplish every day. i love working in nyc, nothing better!
