Journal blinder's Journal: Google Kills Puppies 6

so i was having this very weird, yet very entertaining conversation (via im) with a guy i work with. he's on this project to build a social networking application for a certain large client... and has spent the last few weeks doing mountains of research, most of it analysts type of research into social networking.

today he had to let off some steam, and we got talking about stupid people and how they use search engines to find social networking sites... below is a snippet of that conversation:

(2:04:09 PM) f_f_w: YOU HAVE TO BE FUCKING DUMB TO SEARCH FOR A WEBSITE WHOSE NAME AND URL YOU KNOW!!!!!
(2:04:11 PM) f_f_w: (sorry)
(2:04:16 PM) f_f_w: (segfault)
(2:04:33 PM) blinder: ROFL!!!
(2:04:41 PM) blinder: um yes, really VERY yes
(2:05:06 PM) f_f_w: I wonder why people don't look for yahoo on google...
(2:05:25 PM) blinder: because everytime you do that google kills a puppy

that is all. oh, you wanted a point to this? nope, there is non. sorry, and no, you can't have that 18 seconds of your life back. pitty, that.

  • 1) because most people fail at the intarwebs
    2) I actually use my url-bar pull-down menu as a fast-bookmark site.

Combining one and two, if you put up a url but didn't make it clickable, or perhaps typed it in wrong, I don't want my pulldown cluttered with crap that I don't want to see.

I don't know what this does or doesn't have to do with what you are talking about, but there you have it.

    • i do the same thing but lately when i've been trying to google urls it hasn't given me a clickable link. i don't know why and haven't thought about it much. The other thing i'll do is just paste the link into a program (say metapad) that lets me click on it. so it doesn't get into my pulldown.
    • I don't google full URLs, but I will google portions of domain names if I'm unsure whether it's .org, .com, .net, .info, or .us. I'm not often in the mood to waste my time looking at squatter sites.

      Ditto if I'm not sure if it's http://wdc.com/ [wdc.com] or http://westerndigital.com./ [westerndigital.com.]

TLDs need to be unified so that .com, .org, and .net point to the same IP without a webmaster having to register and pay for each. I mean, seriously...aside from squatters, what significant portion of the business world benefits from ha
