[New computer] It lives! Again!

  • You gave it firewall protection before putting it on the net, right? Several years ago when I installed my W2K system, at the time the reported average for an unprotected Windows box to get owned was 10 minutes, as I recall. Probably much worse today.

    I use a software firewall, an old Tiny Personal Firewall version that I really like, and my procedure was:
    1) Connect PC to a hub (powered on but connected to nothing else).
    2) Install W2K.
    3) Because of the hub, it'll see a network, and let you install and config
    • Yeah, my DSL modem /router doesn't pass anything incoming through.

      I once had a windows 2000 server box hacked on first boot before I had time to shut down IIS.
