Ga. mother seeks Harry Potter ban

ATLANTA - A suburban county that sparked a public outcry when its libraries temporarily eliminated funding for Spanish-language fiction is now being asked to ban Harry Potter books from its schools.

Laura Mallory, a mother of four, told a hearing officer for the Gwinnett County Board of Education on Tuesday that the popular fiction series is an "evil" attempt to indoctrinate children in the Wicca religion.

Board of Education attorney Victoria Sweeny said that if schools were to remove all books containing reference to witches, they would have to ban "Macbeth" and "Cinderella."

"There's a mountain of evidence for keeping Harry Potter," she said, adding that the books don't support any particular religion but present instead universal themes of friendship and overcoming adversity.

In June, the county's library board eliminated the $3,000 that had been set aside to buy Spanish-language fiction in the coming fiscal year. One board member said the move came after some residents objected to using taxpayer dollars to entertain readers who might be illegal immigrants.

Days later, the board reversed its decision amid accusations that the move was anti-Hispanic.

    • Dude, she lives in Gwinette. They are crazy. Didn't they vote to stop MARTA from coming to Gwinette because they were afraid people would ride it from downtown and rob them and then get on the train with a bag full of loot?

        j/k.

Isn't she like, 3 or 4 years too late to get on the "block Harry Potter" bandwagon?
      • Cobb county, Gwinnett county, Forsyth county - none of them want MARTA coming into their jurisdictions. Yes, they are indeed afraid of the po'folk. So instead of taking MARTA into their counties, the po'folk are just buying houses there and moving in instead :p

Seriously - a good chunk of Smyrna has become lower income, and the poor are moving up Jimmy Carter and Lawrenceville Highway, into Tucker and Norcross. It's an interesting pattern, as the "rich" folks kept moving further and further out from downt

He looked through the book and found the following things wrong with the book: discussion of being drunk, smoking cigarettes, violence, "dirty talk," references to the Bible and using God's name in vain. He said the book's material goes against their religions beliefs.

Cuss words in my school book! Noooooooooooooooo! My baby never hears or speaks those words!

Hell, they talked with the teacher and got a substitution book that's not as "Faith shattering". So where's the story?

      • So where's the story?
Umm. "He wants the district to remove the book from the curriculum"? And wanting to ban a book that he hasn't read?

One of the commentators suggested that maybe he conflated the book with Fahrenheit 911. Plenty mused about whether he should let his daughter read The Bible, however no-one pointed out the The Bible itself contains Biblical references.
