It keeps getting harder for me to dismiss the notion that our universe is an elaborate hoax, which is gradually being made more and more ridiculous to find out how long it takes before I reject it entirely.

  • "How dare the Pope mention an old essay saying muslims are violent? Kill the infidel!"
  • "United Nations, you must punish Iran for not obeying international law! Congress, you must stop trying to make *ME* obey international law!"
  • People who want secure verifiable elections "are undermining our democracy".
  • etc, etc, etc.

It's unbelievable that millions of people think any of those things make sense. This stuff has gone WAY beyond "outrage fatigue" and well on its way into the Twilight Zone. How can it possibly be "reality"?

  • Is that we often do not understand how the other extreme thinks. So much so that we often label those in the center to be from the other side.

    So it is here. We're so used to "normal" dialogue between Christian sects, Buddhist sects, Taoists, etc that we fail to remember that at one time, we were just as violent as they are now. We don't remember the Christian Reformation, which stopped killing people for such insults back 450 years ago.

      Nevertheless, it remains that if someone says you are too violent and unreasonable, responding with "I will kill you for saying such lies!" is competely and utterly STUPID.
      • Agreed, from a modern Christian point of view. From a Reformationist point of view though, all that matters is the insult of the moment, and destroying theological thought that is opposed to your own. For this very reason, Queen Elizabeth burned the Catholics- and her cousin/nephew King James returned the favor with Anglicans a few years later, thus inspiring the archetectural spare room known as the Priest Hole throughout England.
