Journal blinder's Journal: [DYPG] The First Batch (UPDATED) 28

under the threat of being terminated for cause by our esteemed ellem, i have put up the first batch of DYPG (Do You Play Guitar?) entries.

Use this journal entry to comment, and please do comment. or not.

i'm still waiting on a few, and will hopefully get solemn's recorded within the next 48 hours or so (when she feels up to it - she's got a lot on her plate).

so, go on over. take a listen. have fun. you'll find a good diverse mix of styles and genres.

UPDATE: like a total idiot, i left out talinom's entry. i have now added it and its good to go.

blinder as always I really dug yours.
Zedmelon's was awesome. I really like that.
RailGunner puts on the shred... how about some reverb?
Mekkab... very nice now go stand by the drummer :D
Subgeek's made me kill, again. But I was in good place when I did it.
StB nice stuff like this one a lot too.
rk bring on the pipes baby! I kept waiting for it to turn into a Korn song or go back into Dazed & Confused.
    ellem... yeah.

We all did, 'cause we got free music from all of us.

This was fun... we should do it again.

I've already sampled yours and wrote a million dollar hit with it.

I mean... uh... yeah we're all winners!

"I've already sampled yours and wrote a million dollar hit with it."

Huh! In that case I guess you won. I'd say don't forget your roots and friends on the mean streets of /., but I'm sure you're already strung out on heroin in the back of the tour bus.

1st part: Dude, LUSH called, and they want their 90's back.
2nd Part: EVH called, and he wants his 80s, AND Valerie Bertanelli back,
3rd Part: METALLICA called, and Lars wants to sue you.
2nd part revisited: DLR called, and he wants to do a show.

      Loved it.
  • Blinder: Very nice tune. You definitely have a distinctive style that I like. Did you multitrack the bass line? I thought we weren't allowed overdubbing. Either way, it was very nice.

Ellem: You sound great on the 12 string, and breaking out into the rock riff made me want to get the hair spray out and start a hair band right there. I was waiting for drums and bass to kick in right around the two minute mark. Nicely played.

Mekkab: You play a mean funk bass... I'm a fair to middlin' bass player,

Rush called; They'd like you to cover the rest of Xanadu.
      • by rk ( 6314 ) *

Yeah, I kinda noticed I was a bit derivative, too. In retrospect, I could've had the grace to play it in a key rather than E.

  • Are you going to have mine in the second batch? I thought I sent it to you a few weeks ago from my navilor [at] gmail [dot] com account.

crapity crapity crapity!!! gah!!! yours will be up in a few minutes. rats! sometimes i can be sooo stupid.

      • by Talinom ( 243100 ) *
No problem. I thought there might have been an e-mail issue or something.

Oh, and if you want stoopid I can give you a few(lot of) examples from my life.
  • i think mekka has been listening to squarepusher. speed this [mtldnb.com] up and rearrange it as the percussion track and the comparison becomes more apparent.

    railgunner goes meedley meedley.

i like zedmelon's. good traveling music. also shaming in its display of instrumental proficiency.

rk should start listening to boards of canada if he hasn't already. they even started using guitar on the campfire headphase.

ellem made me feel good and relaxed, then all tense and ready to run out and buy a gun. first part reminded

Ya know, the thing I hate about squarepusher's basslines, is that he's a noodler. That being said, my joint was ALL noodle, no broth. Cue the whole "splinter in your eye, plank of wood in mine" deal.

Also, Teh Bl1ndz didn't post my other song (with Vocals!)... wich is probably a good thing because I need to re-mix it, but it might have been righ up your alley.

      P.S.= WICKED groove, man. WICKED.

You guys have got some real talent. I enjoyed listening to all the songs.

I think Zed's stuck out. I know the song from somewhere... Eric Johnson? I have to admit, I was wondering if it was someone here actually playing it themselves.. and I mean that in a complimentary way. :)
  • would be a whole lot easier to make room on my plate for it had i know about that 48 hour timeline before you put everything up.

    *sigh*
  • My two cents worth:

Blinder: As usual I enjoyed it. My first thought was that if were to be done with a synthesyzer it would have a very "Axel F" feel but then it morphed into a very relaxing bit.

Ellem: The beginning was very mid to late eighties in it's sound. (Rush's Closer to the Heart comes to mind). Middle: Shit, I think my ass just fell off after having rocked it off. Vaguely Scorpion like. A little Lez Zepplin then Metallica mixed in.

Mekkab: God damn. That was some stanky funk bass. Watch out

Either you spent too much time at the arcade or you watched the movie Tron too much.

      i think both.

      dethklok. awesome.
  • Teh blinder guitar thingie made me want to not kill people. I'll have to keep it handy.

Zedmelon's was pretty awesome as well. Not that the others weren't. Because they were. Just sayin'.
  • For someone to play Asturias by Isaac Albeniz... then I'll deem that person the champeen.
    • by blinder ( 153117 ) *
heh... the idea behind this was to use as much original as possible.

i'm pretty well opposed to cover songs anyway. call me a snob, but i find working on my own material to be much more interesting and stimulating. yeah, there's creativity to be had in re-working someone else's material, but there's still a foundation you have not stray from, and that is just too constricting, too rigid for me.

i know about 5 maybe 6 cover songs, and i "discovered" them all by accident (just fiddling around and happening acro
      • It was a joke... you probably should find a good version of Asturias and listen to it. Its classical guitar and EXTREMELY impressive, technical-wise.

Waste not, get your budget cut next year.

Working...
