Journal frankie's Journal: Our world will end, not with a bang, but carbonated fizz 4

If the terrifying scenes from An Inconvenient Truth weren't enough to get you interested in carbon neutrality, here's another new data point to deny. The oceanic pH of ~8.2 had been stable from as far back as science can measure up to the 1800s. Since then pH has fallen by 0.1, and it is expected to dive another 0.2-0.3 in the next 40-90 years, thanks to carbonation.

Most animals experience medical problems when subjected to such pH shifts, so imagining that happening to the entire ocean is, in proper scientific terms, damn f***ing serious. Says one researcher, "When I see marine snails' shells dissolving while they're alive, that's spooky to me."

  • It seems increasingly likely that my grandchildren are going to live IN HELL. I solemnly vow that if I am still alive when the tipping point finally happens, I will see to it that you (and anyone else who voted for Reagan or either Bush) die by hanging, for crimes against humanity and all other living things.
  • Plant more trees. I hadn't realized it was carbon DIoxide (instead of MONoxide) that was the problem gas- the answer to this is easy. Rip out parking lots and put up paradise (that's what they're doing in Portland anyway- ripping out a single block-sized parking lot, digging down, putting in six levels of underground parking and then planting trees on top.
  • so we might get some new species. like the ones that live in caves like cueva de villa luz where the water's ph is around 1.
  • that our atmospheric problems are more due to the damage we cause to the oceans than what we emit into the air. The oceans can longer longer adequately filter out the poisons coming from the interior of the planet. It is these emissions that are going to cause more problems for us. Our entire air supply comes from the interior. And if the oceans can't clean it up, we will suffocate from methane and CO2 poisoning. We need to restock the plant life. Grow more plankton. This will probably take take care of the
