Journal subgeek's Journal: ask you folks: game rentals 8

traditionally i've been a pc gamer. this means i've missed out on a lot of great console games. as someone who'd like to work in the games industry, i find that inexcusable. i can't afford to buy all the games i have missed, but i can afford to rent quite a few of them. so i have two questions for you all:

1. with which netflix-type game services might anyone here have experience, and what are the resulting recommendations of those experiences?

here are some services i've been able to dig up a little info on:
http://www.gamefly.com/
http://www.gamelender.com/
http://www.gplay.com/
http://www.gamerang.com/Default.aspx

2. whichever service i decide to use, what games do you recommend as things i simply must have the experience of having played?

i currently have a playstation 2 and an xbox. i will aquire an xbox 360 in the near future. i would like to limit recommendations to games that can be played on those systems. i am well aware that there were plenty of good games that came out for the gamecube and the dreamcast, and that there are good games for the various portable systems, but unless you want to send me those systems i don't have the capacity to play them right now.

great gameplay or beautiful artwork could both be considered good reasons to recommend a game. i'm willing to play a good game that isn't beautiful. a game needs to be really beautiful if it is to be recommended in spite of its terrible game play.

thanks everybody.

  • I know that this is a given but you simply have to have played Halo and Halo 2. It is a must as a great FPS. The levels are beautiful, the storyline is interesting, and it has some of the funnest multiplayer action there is. Especially if you have either Xbox live or 4 Xboxs, 4 TVs, and 15 friends you want to have over;-)

Recently my son also got Darkwatch which seems like its pretty fun but I've only played the multiplayer on it thus far. The Call of Duty games are also a lot of fun for a WWII FPS. V

  • Oblivion's the obvious choice. Also Rockstar's Table Tennis is excellent. There's a lot of excellent xbox 1 games that will work on the 360, but check MSFTs backward compatibility list before picking it up if you won't have an original xbox.
  • You have gone and done it my friend. I wouldn't consider myself a game expert or any type of hardcore gamer, though I am a big enthusiast. Lately, I have been a little hardcore on the gaming as this is my one and only love and escape I have at this terrible time in my life.

I'm not personally familiar with any of the services you listed, but the one that I've heard about is Gamefly. From what I've heard people say that is the service to choose. I guess it might be the most comparable to netflix as it seem
  • I've don't understand why no one seems to know about this game. It is incredible in its beauty and simplicity.

It is also a great game for rental use, because once you've solved the puzzles once, its not that fun to play again.

It's a one-player adventure type game, where all you have to do if beat 16 enemies. Huge, incredibly challenging enemies. Definitely a game to take a look at. Especially if art and creativity are important. Here's the Playstation site [playstation.com], you can take a look at the trailer to get the feel
  • I have heard excellent things from a friend who uses gamefly. He is extremely happy with it. They also have a program where you can go to their website and purchase a game they've sent you. They charge you for a used game (about $35 for a 360 game if I remember correctly, but don't quote me on that) and then send you the next game in your queue.
