daniil's Journal: Immaturity

I know most of you don't probably read the front page anymore, but there's a front page article I'd like to turn your attention to. It's titled Immaturity Level Rising in Adults . The article itself isn't really good or interesting (just this short bit from Discovery News about a study that has supposedly shown that "a growing number of people are retaining the behaviors and attitudes associated with youth". I don't think the Discovery article is worth reading. But one comment in that thread caught my eye. This one: "Somewhere in my youth...I matured and I learned too much...I want to live simple again."

Is this what you want? It's not what I want. I don't know what I want, but I definitely don't want to live simple again. This is something I've been offered several times (mostly by Hare Krishnas), and every time I've turned the offer down. These people have promised to make me happy, but this is not the kind of happiness I want. Or maybe I don't want it at all, I don't know. Sometimes, it seems to me that the most important thing in life is being happy despite all your problems. Then again, I could be wrong.

The thing that bothers me the most...

...in that post is that it seems to equate ignorance with innocence and happiness.

But I wouldn't be too hard on the guy. His poison would be ignorance, for some people it's the drugs, for some it's religion and for some oblivion. Whatever floats your boat. Universe doesn't care.

I dunno, I bet if I stuck an icepick in through my eye and swirled around my frontal lobes [wikipedia.org] I wouldn't be as stressed out. Plus my posts here would probably make more sense.

I'm 40 and sure don't act it. In my mid 20's I have a nervous breakdown, was off work for a while, med'd up nicely and just a zombie. Had to see a shrink, too. It was during that period of my life that I realized Shit Happens. I quit worrying about crap I had no control over (weather, price of gas, burned out streetlights, that kind of thing) and just let it all go. I'm sure that depressive ~18 months added years to my life.

it's easy to turn round and say that you'd like your ignorance back. it's also bullshit. if you were having such a great time before, you'd have been too contented to try eating the fruit of knowledge in the first place. fact is, you weren't satisfied with what you had then. that trying to change who you are led you on to further unsatisfaction is a different story altogether. maybe you'll never be satisfied with anything. you certainly won't ever be, if you decide what you want is to be a child again.

Simple life = fooling yourself

So I'm against it. Not that a person has to go out of their way to make life complicated... but yearning for the earlier life of a child is yearning for life as a child.

I derive a reasonable amount of self-esteem from the fact that I'm not a child any more. I'm not a burden to my mom. I am a part of a team that is building a better computer network (and I'm earning a good wage doing so).
