One of the most intelligent things I have ever read. And note that it was written before Hurricane Katrina and what we saw in New Orleans in the aftermath.

On another note, as I said after venturing up to northern VA a couple weekends ago, C leaves for Iraq today-- June 3rd (actually a processing stage before going to Iraq, but for all intents and purposes he leaves today). Found out from L today that she will be following next Saturday.

We have a responsibility to ourselves and our families to be able to protect ourselves against people who wish to do us harm. It's not because the police aren't "perfect," it's because it's not the police's job. The police have no legal responsibility to protect you-- if you call 911 and get killed while waiting for them, your familiy will have no retribution for the police not being there. It's not their job. It's your job to protect yourself and your loved ones.

As naive as it may sound, the money is not a big factor for them. From talking to them both, they really see it as an adventure to embark on together, as well as a chance to hopefully help the people of Iraq towards freedom.

Of course, the money isn't bad either-- but I don't get the impression it's any huge amount, although it's certainly more than they'd be making in a year in DC, so to me I'm sure it'd be a huge amount.

But I definitely agree with you and hope for much boredom for them.
