Journal grub's Journal: Wisdom teeth, Event Horizon, Fromage. 21

(Pardon typos, I'm not in the mood to correct much)

I'm officially wisdom tooth free today. Had an appointment at the oral surgeon's at 8:45 this AM.

My mouth is sore even with the Tylenol 3s (codeine, baby!) and Advil. I can only imagine the pain without.

To avoid laughing and the associated pain I'm watching cheese sci-fi and horror movies at home today. Just finished Event Horizon What a sad rip-off of (Alien|Hellraiser|the genres as a whole).

Cheese Moment #1: the heroes are put into liquid-filled tubes to survive the G-forces of the ion drive (I guess the ion drives of the future will accelerate much faster than the ones today...) When they exit the tubes, their coffee cups and other junk are still on tables around the ship rather than being debris crushed along the back walls.

Cheese Moment #2:On the Event Horizon there's a long tunnel separating the main ship from the spooky gravity drive. Along the tunnel are loads of explosive charges so the ship can separate in case of an emergency. "Right. Those will come into play later." I thought. Later on Lawrence Fishburne is able to run around the spooky ship setting those explosive charges by opening a cover and hitting a button. Wouldn't such devices have some safeguards for people going postal or sabotage?

There's more but I'm tired of typing and am going to watch The Off Season Judging by the reviews I'll have another JE later...

Cheers.

  • I'd recommend The Island if you haven't seen it already. It's a sci-fi/action kind of flick. Not a bad movie even if it ranks a bit on the fromage scale towards the end, but do yourself a favor and don't read what it's about... the back of the DVD case is slightly a spoiler only in that I think it'd be nicer to find out from watching.

And what's up with that work thing you mentioned? Still under wraps?

    • Yeah, we saw The Island. It was pretty good but ripped fairly heavily from Logan's Run, et al. Still an enjoyable movie overall.

The work thing? They've moved our group to be under another centralized group and I'm the official head of it rather than acting head, more $ is always nice! It was hush for a while until they told the appropriate people and had the paperwork done. Effectively I'm doing my old boss' job plus some, not bad for someone who started here 4 years ago this month. :)
      • Nice! Always good to see that pay go up. I'm heading into my fourth month at my current gig, so maybe I can push for a raise after seeing that I do in one day what took the old guy a week to do. :)

    • Hey are you the guy I gave a tour of my work place to some time ago?

Wasn't me, guv! I'm in Vancouver and have never been to Winnipeg, so unless I teleported over in my sleep... :)

        • OK, just wondering. A fellow at work said that his step-daughter's boyfriend (who I gave a tour of my workplace to) mentioned me writing something about a work-related change. Being you had you had asked me it was a good guess. :)
  • I thought the latin was UBER weak. The whole movie was so bad as to be hysterical. And it freaks my wife the fuck out. I don't think she's seen it the whole way through, and we've watched it like 5 times.

I've had all my wisdom teeth extracted and there was only one occasion when I had to take painkillers. The teeth wouldn't come out and the dentist, who was rather a large guy, applied so much force that I was afraid my jaw would get dislocated. Eventually they had to break the tooth and dig it out in pieces. I hurt and bled for a few days after that. On other occasions, they applied so much local anes

    • Jacob's Ladder is a great movie! It creeped my out the first time I saw it and still got under my skin on a couple of subsequent viewings.

The whole hell thing with the flashing images in Event Horizon had me thinking that the Doom movie could have been so much more. Recall that in the games they opened the portal to Hell. The movie was just DNA gone wild IIRC.

The cost of feathers has risen, even down is up!
