I didn't listen to radio. EVAR.
I don't think it was ever good.
And MTV has been a sell-out since day 1 (not wanting to play Michael Jackson? OMGWTFBBQ!)

Pleasure pool at the beach!

Thank you for the precious palpitation that anyone is unable to give me.

  • I listened to the radio... but it was a station run by the Streetsboro city High School which played metal, punk, and industrial all day. I rocked the CD when I could and VRock (88.9) when I couldn't. When I graduated in 1997 it was Godflesh Songs of Love and Hate, Neurosis Through Silver in Blood, Front Line Assembly Hard-wired, Busta Rhymes The Coming, When Disaster Strikes, Depeche Mode Ultra, KMFDM Xtort, Outkast Aquemini, Portishead s/t and the third disc (Metastasen) of a band I had just recently fo
    • I did "have" WDRE (alternative) and WSOU (heavy metal) but... thats not the point. Unless you really rocked the radio it bears no meaning on anything. Your post is a thousand times better than some dumb "In my day R&B slow jamz were kings of the airwaves! And I hated them!"

      • "In my day R&B slow jamz were kings of the airwaves! And I hated them!"

I never got the idea that folks just suffer what is presented to them. 1997 was ass for a lot of music: the death of alternative (with crap like Savage Garden, Silverchair, Meredith Brooks, Seven Mary Three), Puffy, the "Candle in the Wind" remake. But other than being aware of the currents, why throw yourself into unfriendly waters?

And then there were always the few nuggets of pop music gold but they're dead to you from overexpos

Are you kidding? 1997 was a great year. After the dark years of the mid-90s, 1997 saw some light at the end of the tunnel. Sure, there had been a few stalwarts producing some decent albums through the 90s, but they were few and far between, and it took a lot of effort to track them down. But in 1997, we started to see the end of the grunge and alternative scenes, and a return to a state where band weren't afraid to find people that could play their instruments or that had a

          • Well let me rephrase: 1997 was ass for mainstream music (the sort on these Top 100 lists). I've actually been happy with music pretty much continuously. The question is will what is getting played on the radio be tolerable or not.
  • you get limitless respect for starting the list off with spasmolytic.
    • Further down is a 'slow-jam' (?!?!) gem off of Remission, with its AAA-BBA rhyming structure and methodical pacing I think its a quality cut that perhaps outshines Smothered Hope, Glass Houses, and Far Too Frail.
