Comment They should: (Score 1) 502

Stop using proprietary HDDs, controller protocols etc. This is one of the few things Sony got right this generation but I'm afraid MS don't feel enough pressure from them to do the same.

Stop charging for Xbox Live. But with Sony not being competent enough to provide a service that can compete with Xbox Live I doubt they'll have any reason to do so. I wish that Sony would launch ahead of MS (not gonna happen) and apply some pressure.

Provide a decent app store. Apple must be kept out of the gaming space at all costs. I want my developers to focus their efforts on $50 million projects, not on silly Angry Birds derivatives that would have been free Flash games on some obscure website 10 years ago.

But knowing MS, I doubt they will do any of those things.

Activists Destroy Scientific GMO Experiment 1229

Freggy writes "In Belgium, a group of activists calling themselves the Field Liberation Movement has destroyed a field which was being used for a scientific experiment with genetically modified potatoes. In spite of the presence of 60 police officers protecting the field, activists succeeded pulling out the plants and sprayed insecticides over them, ruining the experiment. The goal of the experiment was to test potato plants which are genetically modified to be resistant to potato blight. It's a sad day for the freedom of scientific research."

Comment Re:Competitor to iTunes? Not with their catalog... (Score 1) 95

I would say it's pretty much the other way around. That iTunes would be a compliment to Spotify. I'm not sure how much the catalogues differ from country to country though. Not that I purchase tracks I can't find on Spotify from iTunes though, I simply pirate them. Spotify has a model I can live with. For a very small fee every month (49 SEK) I can listen to unlimited music. Of course, the catalogue could be a lot better but this is somewhat of a chicken and the egg situation. They need more subscribers in order to convince artists and labels to allow their music to be on Spotify. And in order for people to subscribe the catalogue has to be satisfactory. But I'm willing to bet my money on them.

Google Wants Your Voice Data 138

00_NOP writes "Peter Norvig, Google's director of research, has told New Scientist that one of the reasons the search engine launched Google Voice is that it needs more human voice data to perfect the sort of 'big data, simple algorithm' probabilistic approach to translating voices to text that drives Google Translate. Norvig says that no one is listening to your calls on Google Voice — it is simply their servers trying to get the translation right."

77 Million Accounts Stolen From Playstation Network 645

Runaway1956 was one of many users to continue to update us about the intrusion we've been following this week. "Sony is warning its millions of PlayStation Network users to watch out for identity-theft scams after hackers breached its security and plundered the user names, passwords, addresses, birth dates, and other information used to register accounts. Sony's stunning admission came six days after the PlayStation Network was taken down following what the company described as an 'external intrusion'. The stolen information may also include payment-card data, purchase history, billing addresses, and security answers used to change passwords, Sony said on Tuesday. The company plans to keep the hacked system offline for the time being, and to restore services gradually. The advisory also applies to users of Sony's related Qriocity network."

Comment Re:Anonymous represents something new (Score 1) 321

I think the point is that there is no true "organization of Anonymous" people. There may be 10 members, there may be 10 million members. Some may want to hurt Sony, some may not want to. So nobody can truly say whether anonymous does or doesn't do anything. When terrorist organizations with true leaders attack somebody, there is always someone to speak them.

This, pretty much. People seem to have a very hard time grasping the concept of an autonomous group.
