A whole year+ for developers to create titles for a system that doesn't exist in any household? I see a whole lot of new nothing coming out of that.
On the otherhand, with an 18 month headstart and a console in public use, game developers would be able to tap the vein of the gamer community and find out what "works."
Has anyone noticed how each console launches with one "power title" game and a handful of trash games? For XBox it was PGR. That was a wicked game for that console - when it launched! Now look at the titles that are released for the XBox and how much better the graphics and gameplay are for games in the same genre. I mean, compare PGR at launch and NFS: Underground 2. The difference is amazing.
I guess my point is that with a box out first, developers can improve upon the code, graphics, etc. ad nauseum to get the absolute most out of the console. Plus the feedback from the gamers is invaluable. By delaying, yes Sony can benefit from that data as well, but only so much. No matter how good they are, developers still need time to make it play and even more time to make it play hard. It gets worse when they're trying to develop for a console that's "almost ready" for launch.
That 18 month headstart will give M$ and all their minion game makers a chance to dig their heels in and get ready for the blitz. And like someone commented earlier, we are talking about M$ and not Sega. If there is one thing that M$ has proven time and time again, they can take hits on the chin that would normally crush a corporation. Just look at how they rebound from punches thrown by world governments for crying out loud.
I think this is going to be interesting to see play out, but in the words of Hans Solo, "I got a bad feeling about this."
