I disagree, The matrix at best paid lip service to Gibdonesque potrayals of virtual reality.
The Matrix and Dark City have identical plots, just different costumes.
In each film reality as perceived by the human inhabitants of planet earth is in fact an illusion controlled by a sinister non-human force allowing them to manipulate humanity for their own evil purposes. In each case the "chosen one" becomes aware of the situation and is able to "hack" the illusion
and ultimately kick bad guy ass.
Apart from the superficial and highly derivative references to Cyberpunk themes in the Matrix neither of these films has the Gibson touch.
Johnny Mnemonic and The Gernsback Continuum are both much better examples of Gibson's work brought to the big screen.
