In his defense, that's the least known classic blunder, behind:
1. Never getting involved in a land war in Asia.
And
2. Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line.

It appears that PL/I (and its dialects) is, or will be, the most widely used higher level language for systems programming. -- J. Sammet
