I've read slashdot for many years and this is the only thing on it that's made me cry, not that I have anything insightful to say.

You and me both.

I will add this: Very recently, I lost my mother to metastatic, triple-negative breast cancer (the prognosis for that condition is similar to the OPs). The greatest takeaway I have from her is to seize life, and to love life. She loved to learn, lived intentionally, and well, she pursued what she wanted in life fearlessly. Teaching your child (by example) that life is great (though it can be awful at times), and to make the most of it, is a wonderful lesson. Best of luck to you, and sorry for your loss.

This is actually pretty cool, mostly because it's an efficient source of photon pairs. The time-energy entanglement means that photons with particular energies always come out at particular relative times (that is, pairs of photons are produced by splitting one higher energy photon into two lower energy photons, which are emitted at the same time). Photon pairs like this can be used to do quantum key distribution, a secure method of distributing encryption keys, or, with a memory and some clever entanglement swapping protocols, the entanglement resource could be transported over long distances to do true quantum communication, where measurement in one place guarantees a result at the other place, and anyone listening in will destroy the communication channel.

I liked the historical notes in the book of his that I read. I must admit that the book I read was for a fairly introductory class, and so I wasn't thrilled with the level or pace of the text, and the explanations and derivations got worse as the material became more complicated. I've experienced much worse authors, so I guess I really shouldn't complain about Anderson, though he did bore me to tears. My background is in Physics now, because my Aerospace Engineering classes got to be so dull and full of busywork. I also enjoy the more thorough proofs and explanations I got in Physics.

Back to the topic at hand, I don't see any kind of scramjet powered passenger planes coming around anytime soon. I don't think we have materials to withstand the stresses that would be induced, or a customer base willing to pay the high price of such transportation.
