"autonomous control" implies that it's guidance systems are on-board. Receiving power and flight controls over a wire isn't at all what I imagined from the headline =) However, still very cool =)

Those drives weren't written with zeros-- only physically damaged =) Also it looked like each platter was relatively intact.
