Well, if its efficiency you're after, it is hard to beat edible algae. Dump a bunch of crud in a pot, add algae culture, wait a while and skim off "food".
Taste is about what one would expect, but you can eat it. The scary thing about the Greens is that there are people out there who think it would be a really good idea to MAKE everybody eat that, leaving the Earth free for fluffy bunnies, trees and nice obscure molusks.
News flash, most of us (as is 93% apparently) will fight to the death for our chicken if the alternative is glorified pond slime. So bring on the 10 story high chicken farm, baby! I've got a need for some white meat.
