Arctic Sea Ice Rallies a Bit 152

radioweather writes "Like the recent stock market rebound, Arctic sea ice is making a big rally over the record low set last year. According to the Alaskan IARC-JAXA website, satellite data which shows sea ice extent as of 10/14/08 was 7,064,219 square kilometers, when compared to a year ago 10/14/08 it was 5,487,656 square kilometers. The one-day gain between 10/13/08 and 10/14/08 of 3.8% is also quite impressive. On May 5th, The National Snow and Ice Data Center suggested the possibility of an ice-free north pole in 2008, but so far, this year has been a banner year for sea ice recovery."

Feed Techdirt: Study Finds IRS Very Susceptible To Social Engineering (techdirt.com)

The IRS has had problems modernizing their computer system in the past, but no matter how modern your computer system is, security is weak if your employees are easily duped through social engineering techniques. A new study found that 60% of the employees they tested were willing to hand over sensitive info to a person calling and posing as IRS tech support. This type of social engineering happens all the time, but it seems especially worrisome that so many IRS employees would be so willingly giving out info when they have access to so much confidential info and should be especially aware of the threat. In fact, the report notes that similar tests were done in 2001 and 2004 and the IRS promised to put in place measures to prevent these types of tricks from working. Apparently, that hasn't really happened.

Dateline NBC Mole Outed At DefCon 573

An anonymous reader writes "Dateline NBC allegedly attempted to infiltrate the DefCon hackerfest with a producer using a hidden camera. The show hoped to tape hackers admitting to illegal activities, but DefCon got wind of the plot and displayed the would-be-mole's photo before every presentation. Dateline refused to deny the planned infiltration. 'All journalists covering DefCon sign an agreement upon registering for the conference that outlines the rules, but the DefCon organizers say the mole apparently registered as a regular attendee, thereby bypassing the legal agreement. Dateline NBC is best known for its controversial To Catch A Predator series, which uses hidden cameras to tape men who are allegedly seeking to have sex with minors they met online.'"
