When my company's software got DoS'd, we looked for areas that we could provide performance enhancements either in the database of application. A lot of times, you can handle tons more traffic by making sure that everything in the application is performing as well as possible. Also, traffic shapers couldn't hurt, since they give you a way to automatically monitor for DoS style attacks and block them. Just my 2 cents.
