Not only that, there was a real sense of "something at stake" in Star Trek. People die and they don't come back (yes, there are exceptions, as in Shore Leave and Spectre of the Gun). Their alternate-timeline selves don't appear. They're just dead.
I'm glad you brought up the writing; so few people ever do. They concentrate on allegations that Patrick Stewart is a better actor than Shatner (false), or that the effects in TNG are better (immaterial). The writing really makes Star Trek stand head and shoulders over all the other series. I suppose some later episodes of DS9 could be said to come close.
As Robert says in "Free Enterprise," "I fucking hate Next Generation! Only classic!" Or something like that.
