Homosexuality was also considered a âoediseaseâ in the United States until 1973 when it was officially removed from the DSM.
Definitions of âoedisease,â especially ones that have nothing to do with infectious agents, but are primarily based on behavior or beliefs, environment or genetics, change over time. Because these things are not diseases at all, and the labeling of them as a âoediseaseâ serves a socio-political purpose, and gives people cover to exercise superiority complexes, discriminate against, and persecute that which they fear and/or donâ(TM)t understand.
(Even if you believe in the ahistorical nonsense that being trans is a âoedisease,â we donâ(TM)t persecute and discriminate against people with cancer.)
The reason the âoeLGBâ stand up for the âoeTQ+â is that the LGB have been there, once labeled as âoediseasedâ for being who they are, persecuted for their identities, and recognize that no one should be stigmatized for identity characteristics they didnâ(TM)t choose and canâ(TM)t control.
And they are right. There is no zero sum game, where the âoeTQ+â are somehow âoeweakeningâ the âoeLGBâ movement. They are the same movement: standing up for each otherâ(TM)s rights to exist as the creatures of God who we are.
