Paleontologists Discover World's Horniest Dinosaur 109

Ponca City, We love you writes "The Guardian reports that paleontologists have uncovered the remains of an ancient beast called Kosmoceratops richardsoni that stood 16 feet tall with a 6-foot skull equipped with 15 horns and lived 76 million years ago in the warm, wet swamps of what is now southern Utah. 'These animals are basically over-sized rhinos with a whole lot more horns on their heads. They had huge heads relative to their body size,' says Scott Sampson, a researcher at the Utah Museum of Natural History."

First MySQL 5.5 Beta Released 95

joabj writes "While MySQL is the subject of much high-profile wrangling between the EU and Oracle (and the MySQL creator himself), the MySQL developers have been quietly moving the widely-used database software forward. The new beta version of MySQL, the first publicly available, features such improvements as near-asynchronous replication and more options for partitioning. A new release model has been enacted as well, bequeathing this version the title of 'MySQL Server 5.5.0-m2.' Downloads here."

As you said, hideously expensive, for text messages sent in the otherwise unused bandwith between voice packets, essentially free for the carriers. Hence the need for investigations. You have 2 options, an overpriced monthly play, or a severly limited pay as you go plan, but nothing in between. With so many carriers, there should be a whole range of plan types to fit everybody's needs, but there's not.

Web Scam Bilks State of Utah Out of $2.5M 138

KitB sends in a story in the Salt Lake Tribune that tells of a Web-based scam, resembling some used by Nigerian gangs, that snared the state of Utah. $2.5M was sent to a bank account in Texas before the bank raised a question and then froze $1.8M in the account. "Thieves apparently used a Nigerian-based scam to steal $2.5 million from the Utah treasury, covering their tracks by using intermediaries and a church address. A Salt Lake Tribune review of the names listed in a search warrant as receiving or transferring money [found] names of African origin or connections to that continent. Michael Kessler, ... a forensic accounting [investigator] in New York City, said the thieves appear to have used a simple scam that originated in Nigeria about five years ago. The Utah theft is the first time he's seen a government victimized. 'Their IT people should have known better,' Kessler said after reviewing a copy of the search warrant Thursday. 'It sounds like any kid could have done this.'"

Sounds like QOS to me.

Except that's where the problem lies, in choosing which protocols deserve "quality service" and which don't.

If I'm making a "voice call" through a service they offer, is that a higher priority than your "peer to peer" connection that is in fact a Skype call between yourself and a friend who lives overseas?

If I'm streaming video through their on demand video servers, does that traffic get higher priority than the free video you are streaming from Hulu.com?

If you are encrypting traffic for security reasons, does that get delayed because they fear you are using encryption to circumvent their thrott^H^H^H^H^H^H congestion management?

They want the monopoly rights of a utility provider but then want to promote quality service for their commercial offerings at the expense of traffic they deem less important, just because it doesn't bring them any additional revenue.
