Think Secret Shutting Down 240

A number of readers are sending in the news that the Mac rumors site Think Secret will be shutting down, as part of the (secret) settlement of a lawsuit Apple filed in 2005. Apple had claimed that the blog, published since 1998 by college student Nick Ciarelli, had revealed Apple's trade secrets. The only other detail of the settlement that has been revealed is that Think Secret was not forced to reveal any sources.

Google Conducts Trial on User-Voted Search Results 110

Grim Reaping writes "A feature in testing at Google Labs allows users to not only prioritize their favorite results, but also move, ignore, and add search results to personalized records of their preferences. The experiment features a simple 'thumbs up' and 'thumbs down' option for each search result; users can also suggest a URL that might be more relevant to their query. 'Other Google users will not be affected by the individual tweaking: instead it will be stored along with the users' own personal information for the next time they search for this word or phrase, so users are required to log in to avail of it.'" The company is also clear on the experiment's page: this feature may never see full release on the site.

Google has anything but a monopoly.

They have a much stronger hold on the advertising market, where the product is not search but AdWords. Customers are businesses, not people looking for information.

If > 50% of your business comes from AdWords, switching away from it might be the end of your company...

Submission + - Online Credit Card Scam Exposed

An anonymous reader writes: An exposé was recently published, revealing a widely used, but little known online scam being used by companies such as Web Loyalty Reservation Rewards. The writer is not alone in getting scammed by the company. What makes everything even more interesting is that now the company has responded, with the usual white washing and meaningless statements. Evidently the scam works by offering you a "cash back reward" or other similar sounding deal. When you click to claim it, it takes you to a page from which you have to opt-out of a recurring monthly charge. The sad thing is, the company you *DID* want to buy from has already given them your credit card information by this point, making it hard to avoid the charges from this scam.

Microsoft Denies Sabotaging Mandriva Linux PC Deal 161

An anonymous reader writes "Microsoft has denied sabotaging Mandriva's deal with the Nigerian government to supply Classmate PCs from Intel along with a customized Mandriva Linux operating system. 'From Microsoft's perspective it's a matter of choice. In the statement sent to InternetNews.com, Microsoft said it believes individuals, governments and other organizations should be free to choose the software and other technologies that best meet their needs. "We are seeing strong market demand for Windows on low-cost devices to help governments in the areas of education, local innovation, and jobs and opportunity," the Microsoft spokesperson said in the statement.' The company's denial is in response to Mandriva's CEO Francois Bancilhon expression of disappointment with Microsoft."

Vonage Goes To Court III - The AT&T Suit 113

kickabear writes "AT&T has filed a lawsuit against Vonage, claiming patent infringement. This is the third major lawsuit to have been brought against Vonage by a major phone company. Vonage lost the previous two lawsuits, brought by Sprint-Nextel and Verizon. How much more money can Vonage afford to give away? How can Vonage educate a jury on prior art? 'It said in a filing to the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission that AT&T is seeking injunctive relief, compensatory and treble damages and attorneys' fees in unspecified amounts. Vonage said the lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court of the Western District of Wisconsin on October 17.'"
