I did read the book review guidelines and i did see this text: "Unless your Net access is severely limited, submit your review through the Slashdot submissions page. Select "Book Reviews" from the drop-down menu, and an appropriate topic from the list. Paste in your HTML text (select "HTML formatted" from the box under the text area), and then preview:" But evidently my firefox from Spain does not allow me to see this pull down menu ... so I hope what I did is ok.

The Big Technical Mistakes of History 244

An anonymous reader tips a PC Authority review of some of the biggest technical goofs of all time. "As any computer programmer will tell you, some of the most confusing and complex issues can stem from the simplest of errors. This article looking back at history's big technical mistakes includes some interesting trivia, such as NASA's failure to convert measurements to metric, resulting in the Mars Climate Orbiter being torn apart by the Martian atmosphere. Then there is the infamous Intel Pentium floating point fiasco, which cost the company $450m in direct costs, a battering on the world's stock exchanges, and a huge black mark on its reputation. Also on the list is Iridium, the global satellite phone network that promised to make phones work anywhere on the planet, but required 77 satellites to be launched into space."

I use latex on linux and it is fine. On windows MikTex actually goes and finds missing pacakges and downloads and installs them for you which is cool. Texclipse (Eclipse plugin) makes a nice editor - its not WYSIWYG like lyx but rather a code editor and understands the latex codes and bib references etc. I have used Word DecWrite FrameMaker WordPerfect - you name it and I have used them all in anger, nothing tops latex. We looked again acouple of years ago for a large long project we started then and decided for Latex - especially as Adobe droped framemaker on linux) We recently introduced a yound student to latex, he was using word. Within a couple of days he said "I am doing everythign in tex from now on". So train up and become a Jedi master - stay away from the dark side (WYSYWIG;)

Google Scoops Microsoft w/ Mesh Applications 152

Julie188 writes "Google's offline access for Google Apps is a kick in the shin at Ray Ozzie. Google took a page right out of the Ozzie mesh playbook when it announced the offline access (let's call it Google Docs Unplugged). Google delivered desktop apps from the cloud first and then added unplugged functionality. Microsoft wants to do the same, but in reverse, and faces an infinitely bigger challenge: rebuild Microsoft apps so they can become cloud enabled while pulling its giant channel (and embedded software) along in the process. Good luck with that, Microsoft. But then again, just because Google is making faster progress doesn't mean much. There's no guarantee users will like the unplugged versions of cloud apps."
