Comment Google Terms and Conditions (Score 2) 152

Maybe it's time for Google to have Terms and Conditions... For Countries. Quote: If you want google to be available within your countries boundaries - based on IP address and nothing else by the way since we aren't going to check anything but this - then you as a sovereign country agree to the following: (1) Google does not support "Right to be forgotten" or any other censorship that you may want. Forget it or forget google. (2) Google does not fiddle with it's search results based on your country preferences. If you don't like the results, seek help with an SEO expert, or google will just not be present in your country / jurisdiction. (3) Google will abide by the terms and conditions that it has published. If you don't like them, then don't use Google or don't have google in your country. (4) We are running the best search engine that we can, based on our own conscience and our business plan. If you don't like these terms and conditions, make your own search engine. Up to you. End Quote: Seems like it's time for this.

Comment Password managers make this unnecessary (Score 1) 76

Seems to me that if you use a password manager - LastPass among others - then this is unnecessary. I never type my password. and if I'm phished, then the site won't match the password manager entry and won't be filled in. So, google would have been better off allowing / providing a good password manager rather than this half measure that only sees it after the fact rather than preventing you from entering it in the first place. Personally, I'm waiting for SQRL that will eliminate the need for passwords altogether. https://www.grc.com/sqrl/sqrl.... -ww

Immaculate Conception In a Boa Constrictor 478

crudmonkey writes "Researchers have discovered a biological shocker: female boa constrictors are capable of giving birth asexually. But the surprise doesn't end there. The study in Biology Letters found that boa babies produced through this asexual reproduction — also known as parthenogenesis — sport a chromosomal oddity that researchers thought was impossible in reptiles. While researchers admit that the female in the study may have been a genetic freak, they say the findings should press researchers to re-think reptile reproduction. Virgin birth among reptiles, especially primitive ones like boas, they argue may be far commoner than ever expected."

Scientists To Breed the Auroch From Extinction 277

ImNotARealPerson writes "Scientists in Italy are hoping to breed back from extinction the mighty auroch, a bovine species which has been extinct since 1627. The auroch weighed 2,200 pounds (1000kg) and its shoulders stood at 6'6". The beasts once roamed most of Asia and northern Africa. The animal was depicted in cave paintings and Julius Caesar described it as being a little less in size than an elephant. A member of the Consortium for Experimental Biotechnology suggests that 99% of the auroch's DNA can be recreated from genetic material found in surviving bone material. Wikipedia mentions that researchers in Poland are working on the same problem."

Comment I was an early adopter, but no more (Score 1) 589

I was an early adopter of the Rocket Ebook. It had a large format - 3x4.5 in - good ergonomics and it was open. It was possible to convert text or html pages to it's html dialect with images, so that I could read wired or other content. But it was consolidated away. Any system that I find interesting will have to be:
(1) open, DRM be hanged. Must support any type of protected book. Not just one. Protection is ok. But it still must be open.
(1.2)I have to be able to create and move any type of content that I have or can get to the thing or I'm not going to invest in it.
(1.5)And it's got to have open connectivity too. No special protocols. Gotta look like a USB storage device, so no special cables, or programs on host to make it work.
(2) support multiple e-book formats. PDF, HTML, and whatever else comes along with plug-ins.
(3) have expandable memory capability, Some standard memory card slot as well as reasonable internal memory.
(4) guarantee some sort of future compatibility, with a big company behind it. Be consolidation proof...
(5) these days, be in color.

I'm still waiting...
As permanent as my book library and as future proof.
