MySQL Ends Enterprise Server Source Tarballs 413

vboulytchev writes "The folks at MySQL has quietly announced that it will no longer be distributing the MySQL Enterprise Server source as a tarball. It's been about a year since the split between the paid and free versions of the database project. The Enterprise Server code is still under the GNU General Public License (GPL), and as a result MySQL appears to be making it harder for non-customers to access the source code. 'One of the things that many users worry about is whether they're getting an inferior version of MySQL by using the Community version. Urlocker says that MySQL "wants to make sure the Community version is rock solid," but admitted that the company has introduced features into the Community edition of the software that "[weren't] as robust as we thought, and created some instabilities." Because of that, the company is revising its policies about when features go into the Community releases.'" Update: 08/10 04:56 GMT by CN :While it is slightly harder to get, the source isn't closed by any means, so I updated the title to reflect that.

Ancestry.com To Add DNA Test Results 223

Spamicles writes "For less than $200 and a cheek-swiped cotton swab, you will soon be able to add DNA results to family tree Web sites. Ancestry.com plans to launch the DNA testing product by the end of summer, offering customers the possibility of finding DNA matches in the site's 24,000 genealogical databases. By taking a simple cheek-swab test and comparing results against DNA profiles in a test-results database, virtually anyone can uncover genealogical associations unimaginable just a few years ago. Users can easily connect with and discover lost or unknown relatives within a few generations, as well as gain insight into where their families originated thousands of years ago."

Feed Feds Need A Warrant To Search Email (techdirt.com)

Remember just last week we were looking at a court case that was trying to work out whether social networking messages were more private than email? Well, now a federal appeals court has strengthened the privacy of good old email as well. It turns out that federal investigators need to obtain a warrant before they can go snooping through your email. Many people probably assumed that was already the case, but the Justice Department felt differently about the matter -- and now have had both a lower court and an appeals court disagree. Of course, there will likely be another appeal, so this may end up in front of the Supreme Court eventually. However, in the meantime, it looks like at least some courts are recognizing that email users should have an expectation of privacy when it comes to their communications.

Feed Plants Do Not Emit Methane (sciencedaily.com)

A recent study in Nature suggested that terrestrial plants may be a global source of the potent greenhouse gas methane, making plants substantial contributors to the annual global methane budget. This controversial finding and the resulting commotion triggered a consortium of Dutch scientists to re-examine this in an independent study. These scientists conclude that methane emissions from plants are negligible and do not contribute to global climate change.

Comment Re:Spain (Score 1) 504

Having moved from the UK to Spain I have some sympathy with this however I suspect this is more the case with ASDL lines than with cable. One DSL provider in particular is offering 20MB (DSL2+) down + 1MB up for about 35/month. Which sounds great (or sounded great in my case) until you have a problem. The company has so much demand for it services it cannot cope with new activations or problems with new activations. From what I had heard all their internal systems are not linked so when you call their service center any tickets/issues raised to get an engineer out to test your line never make it to the engineers. To add to that Telefonica (the national equivalent of British Telecom or AT&T (or what ever they are called)) is being investigated for anti-trust business practices in their provision of broadband.

Saying that since I moved here I have been with Ono the largest (if not only now) cable provider and have had on the whole a fault-less service. Not as fast as the ADSL2+ offerings but it works which is what I need for working from home. More than I can say for Jazztel
