Final line in the paper: "Therefore, the most we can read from the overall balance of marks is that open source development approaches do not produce software of markedly higher quality than proprietary software development." Interesting, but not shocking for those who have worked with disciplined commercial teams. I wonder what the results would be in less critical areas than the kernel, say certain types of applications.
Putting aside for a moment that quality could be subjective, you can have outstanding quality code that misses the business requirements entirely. This study would have more value if it compared the resulting code against the stated business requirements and indicated how close it came. After all, the purpose of (business) code is to meet the requirements, right? :-) Owen
