Now today we hear of a directed attack against the repositories of Sourceforge? Something doesn't smell right... I wonder what's going on... I got 20 bucks that says it's the same people...

Submission + - SourceForge down after attack (sourceforge.net) 1

Animats writes: SourceForge, a hosting site for many open source projects is down today. management claims they were attacked: "We detected a direct targeted attack that resulted in an exploit of several SourceForge.net servers, and have proactively shut down a handful of developer centric services to safeguard data and protect the majority of our services." Currently, CVS and SVN access to source code, even for reading, is unavailable, and there is no announced restoration time.

Ironically enough, I had an Athlon XP 2800 in my apartment in college, in the living room, along with a gig switch and few other machines. Living in Canada, winters get quite cold, and we used the computers instead of our baseboard heaters to keep the living room warm. When the PSU in the Athlon XP 2800 system died, the ambient temperature in the room dropped by 5 degrees. I guess that's what happens when your processors idles in BIOS at over 50 degrees C.

I have found that things like 5 Hour Energy work decently, no crash, that Niacin flush is a little weird though. Tobacco compliments the caffein nicely. If neither of these is acceptable to you, there is always cocain :P

Submission + - Incredible double eclipse pic: Sun, Moon, and ISS (discovermagazine.com)

The Bad Astronomer writes: The exceptionally talented astrophotographer Thierry Legault captured a picture extraordinary even for him: the space station passing in front of the Sun while the Sun was being partially eclipsed by the Moon! He traveled all the way from France to the Sultanate of Oman to take this amazing shot. I have more information about the picture itself on the Bad Astronomy blog, but you should go to Thierry's website to see more amazing pictures he's taken over the years. They're simply jaw-dropping.

The guy who wrote this article clearly has no friends anymore. My friends and I have a massive LAN party every friday night. Upwards of 2 dozen PC's, 3 or 4 360's, 3 or 4 PS3's. There is everything from MVC2 running on MAME, to SF4 to Counter-Strike to Unreal Tournament 2k6, and even some Worms(Holy hand Grenade FTW). VPN into the LAN party is sometimes accepted depending on the event, but generally, you gotta show up. It's a ton of fun cramming between 12 and 36 people into a small 800 square foot 2 bedroom apartment and beating the crap out of each other or blowing each other up. I've said for years that nothing brings friends closer together then blowing each others heads off. Yelling and screaming, betting and losing, 1 on 1 grudge matches, what else could anyone want? Local MP/Co-Op is NOT dead, it has just evolved into something different. We've had LAN parties for years with PC's but now with consoles in the mix, it has simply changed from 2-4 players to dozens.

Submission + - DHS Seized Domains Based On Bad Evidence

An anonymous reader writes: Back over Thanksgiving, the Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement unit (ICE) made a lot of news by seizing over 80 domain names. While many of these involved sites that sold counterfeit products, five of the domains involved copyright issues. Four of them involved hiphop related blogs — including ones that hiphop stars like Kanye West and others used to promote their own works, and the last one was a meta search engine that simple aggregated other search engines. Weeks went by without the owners of those sites even being told why their domains were seized, but the affidavit for the seizure of those five sites has recently come out, and it's full of all sorts of problems. Not only was it put together by a recent college graduate, who claimed that merely linking to news and blog posts about file sharing constituted evidence of copyright infringement, it listed as evidence of infringement songs that labels specifically sent these blogs to promote. Also, what becomes clear is that the MPAA was instrumental in "guiding" ICE's rookie agent in going after these sites, as that appeared to be the only outside expertise relied on in determining if these sites should be seized. There doesn't appear to have been any scrutiny over whether or not seizing such domain names violated the First Amendment, which may come back to haunt Homeland Security, since such analysis is required under Supreme Court precedent.

Here is what you do. Write down your idea. Make it nice, neat, logical and clear. Go to the post office. Mail the idea to yourself with registered mail. When your idea comes back to you file it away in a safe spot. DO NOT OPEN IT! In the event anyone ever tries to patent such an idea, even after you make it, you can sue. When you go to the courtroom, bring your registered mail(which is dated on the envelope I might add) and you can show it is sent from you, to you, open it up, read your idea. And then the judge has no choice but to accept that it was your idea and you hold the rights to it because you came up with it first and the post mark on it is considered a valid, reliable date. And yes, I have seen this work in the past. This allows you to keep the idea free without having to deal with the bullshit of the USPTO because it is your idea so you can control it.

In North America some people see salaried as a bad thing because 1) even after taxes and insurance, contractors make WAY more and 2) Many employers take advantage of salaried workers. They give us Blackberry's, expect us to reply to any message within 5 minutes of receiving, even at 2:30 in the morning, and they feel like they are entitled to have us work overtime and not pay us. Over here, most on-call work gets you no compensation unless you get called in, and even then, many employers still don't end up paying, they just try to dodge the bullet. It's very unfair sometimes. I know I've had my fair share of employers who never paid overtime, and then when you tried to use your lieu time to get an afternoon off, they made you feel like a worthless useless piece of crap for it. Comment It's a stressful industry (Score 0) 347

IT is a stressful industry and as you become more and more skilled you get more and more stress. Look at the CCIE certification. I remember reading an article that said CCIE certified network admins have the highest divorce rate of anyone in IT. They also mentioned that IT has a higher divorce rate then most industries. The stress comes from the job, and it comes from home. Many times spouses have issues dealing with the on-call nature of IT and feel like their spouse cares more about work then about the relationship/family. I have had this issue with my girlfriend when I did network operations at an ISP(hooray for call-ins on Thanksgiving and Christmas, boy was I in the dog house). As far as minimizing stress, regardless of your situation, make time for you(Playing with the kids doesn't count). Even just 5 minutes of busting heads on the ps3 or 360 can be very relieving. Maybe you're a DnD player, find a group and make time in your life to play. Paint some warhammer. Or the best of all, lots of sex. Sex is what I have found to be #1 stress reliever, come home and take out your stress on the girlfriend/wife. She'll probably enjoy it and itll take the stress away from home life too. One or any combination of such things will make you a happier, more personable, and less stressed IT worker.
