I think the example of the binary search is a bad one for reasons already pointed out. But that example differs from the others by being a problem for which you know exactly what it is supposed to do. I hope there are still people believing that just trying out something -- be it a doodle, a physical experiment, some code or a circuit -- is an important process in the discovery of new things.
