Submission + - Activists destroy scientific GMO experiment (deredactie.be)

Freggy writes: "In Belgium, a group of activists calling themselves the Field Liberation Movement has destroyed a field which was being used for a scientific experiment with genetically modified potatoes. In spite of the presence of 60 police officers protecting the field, activists succeeded pulling out the plants and sprayed insecticides over them, ruining the experiment. The goal of the experiment was to test potato plants which are genetically modified to be resistant to potato blight. It's a sad day for the freedom of scientific research."

I don't see the need to have people post under their real names in the Blizzard forums to lower the number of trolls. For example to post in the SC2 forums, you should need a SC2 key (this may already be in place) and since each user is associated to only one account, banning a user from the forums would require them to shell out another $60 for a new key. I think this would be a very good deterrent.

Instead...they succeeded in their stated goals, bringing happiness and prosperity to all?

Wait...

At least in the case of Stalinist Russia, happiness wasn't the goal. The incredibly rapid industrialization of Russia was and that was a tremendous success though at a horrible human cost. It's no secret that non-democratic states are much more efficient than democratic ones.

I agree that past totalitarian states (especially communist ones) had terrible environmental records. However, these non-totalitarian states did not have the goal of saving the environment. I think Lovelock's point is that he believes someone needs to be put in charge to direct responses to climate change that isn't responsible to corporate/private interests as current world governments are.

Submission + - Scientists Able to Make Fuel from CO2 and Sunlight (wired.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Wired.com reports that scientists at Sandia National Laboratories are creating a prototype of a system that will be able to synthesize methanol and gasoline using sunlight and carbon dioxide: "The Sunlight to Petrol, or S2P, project essentially reverses the combustion process, recovering the building blocks of hydrocarbons. They can then be used to synthesize liquid fuels like methanol or gasoline. Researchers said the technology already works and could help reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, although large-scale implementation could be a decade or more away... Lab experiments have shown that the process works, Stechel said. The researchers hope to finish a prototype by April... The Sandia team envisions a day when CR5s are installed in large numbers at coal-fired power plants. Each of them could reclaim 45 pounds of carbon dioxide from the air daily and produce enough carbon monoxide to make 2.5 gallons of fuel. Coupling the CR5 with CO2 reclamation and sequestration technology, which several scientists already are pursuing, could make liquid hydrocarbons a renewable fuel, Stechel said."
