I believe the main cause is different target. In office everyone target is number of hours worked, because time is what managers usually measure for various reasons. In home everyone target is job done, because managers could not measure time anyone. With everyone focusing on the target, it is obvious that once you are actually compare job done for 2 different targets, exact match is dominating. You easily could do asynchronous communications in office. You need just a little bit of discipline.
