Comment Win10 the toy OS (Score 1) 982

I don't understand why otherwise seemingly intelligent people continue to put up with the MS fiasco and then pay to do it. Just wait until the "free" upgrade period to Win10 runs out and see what comes next from Redmond. A decade-and-a-half ago I switched all my computers to Linux, learned how it works, learned how to administer it, trained its users, and I haven't looked back (to Win) since. Life in my shop is so-o-o-o much easier for me, and way less expensive, than for my colleagues who still insist on buying and using MS products in their shops. My recommendation is to install either Mint or Ubuntu and stop the pain. It's like going to dentist when you need to and getting all the continuous pain over with.

Lesson to the wise: 1) Buy good, newish, used computers at a large discount off new prices and save money 2) Wipe the hard drive clean (or install a new one) 3) Install the OS of your choice (a Linux version is best) and save more money, and lastly, 4) Install whatever applications programs you want from a trusted Linux repository onto your hard drive and save even more money. End result: The only software residing on your "new" computer should be software that you want or don't mind having. Unfortunately, if you want something done correctly you usually must do it yourself.

Back when Linux was much more primitive I had to set the video monitor parameters by hand coding configuration files. And, by accidentally over-specifying the maximum sync rates, I "smoked" the flyback (horizonal output) transformer in a new 21" Sun monitor in short order. I typed in one wrong number and $$$.
