IBM Takes a (Feline) Step Toward Thinking Machines 428

bth writes "A computer with the power of a human brain is not yet near. But this week researchers from IBM Corp. are reporting that they've simulated a cat's cerebral cortex, the thinking part of the brain, using a massive supercomputer. The computer has 147,456 processors (most modern PCs have just one or two processors) and 144 terabytes of main memory — 100,000 times as much as your computer has."

Wireless Network Modded To See Through Walls 161

KentuckyFC writes "The way radio signals vary in a wireless network can reveal the movement of people behind closed doors, say researchers who have developed a technique called variance-based radio tomographic imaging which processes wireless signals to peer through walls. They've tested the idea with a 34-node wireless network using the IEEE 802.15.4 wireless protocol (the personal area network protocol employed by home automation services such as ZigBee). The researchers say that such a network could be easily distributed by the police or military wanting to determine what's going on inside a building. But such a network, which uses cheap off-the-shelf components, might also be easily deployed by your neighbor or anybody else wanting to monitor movements in your home."

The Evolution of Multiplayer Games and Online Play 244

Ranga14 writes "The recently announced Command & Conquer 4 seems to be following the same path of Blizzard's Starcraft 2 in having no LAN/offline multiplayer. They will require users to be logged in at all times to even be able to play any facet of the game. What will this mean for LAN parties, gaming events and those who don't play online? Is this a sound business decision, or do EA & Blizzard not get that this method of attempting to thwart piracy will fail like others have?"

Cosmologists use the term 'dust' to refer collectively to non-relativistic matter in the early universe.
I believe he was referring to "Dust" as per the book series that starts with The Golden Compass (Northern Lights, here in Australia), which had a movie recently of the same name. In the book/movie, "Dust" is an invisible matter that can be photographed with a certain filter, the Dust comes from an interdimensional rift and is attracted to people, via their personal "daemons", which are much like external souls. If I'm wrong, forgive me, but I'm pretty sure original "Dust" poster was being sarcastic/funny. tl;dr - Read books, they good.
