Most Mac Owners Also Own a Windows PC, But Not Vice Versa 814

Barence writes "More than eight out of ten Mac owners also own a PC, according to a new piece of research. The NPD survey found that 12% of US computer-owning households have a Mac. However, 85% of those also own a Windows PC, suggesting that the Mac/PC divide is nowhere near as clear cut as both Apple and Microsoft suggest. Mac owners are also far more likely to have multiple computers in the house. Two thirds of Mac owners have three or more computers in the home, while only 29% of PC owners have two or more PCs."

Sloppy Linux Admins Enable Slow Brute-Force Attacks 391

badger.foo passes on the report of Peter N. M. Hansteen that a third round of low-intensity, distributed brute-force attacks is now in progress — we earlier discussed the first and second rounds — and that sloppy admin practice on Linux systems is the main enabler. As before, the article links to log data (this time 770 apparently already compromised Linux hosts are involved), and further references. "The fact that your rig runs Linux does not mean you're home free. You need to keep paying attention. When your spam washer has been hijacked and tries to break into other people's systems, you urgently need to get your act together, right now."

I'm Swedish, and I've never in my life heard minnespinne or minnepinne other than as a joke in the realm of funny direct translation (from "memory stick"). The only two terms I've been hearing are "USB-minne" and _maybe_ "minnessticka", the latter being an adaptation of "memory stick", (the noun sticka is more like splinter.) USB-minne definitely being the mostly used term, by far. :-)

Yep. My desktop PC has 2 GiB of RAM, and I set my swap partition to 1 GiB. Whenever I look at gnome-system-monitor, the memory usage is always between like 10 and 25 percent, and swap usage is at a static 0 percent. All the time. Probably never swapped a byte in its existence. I don't do much else than code and download/play media, so I don't imagine it should consume a lot of RAM (which is one of the reasons I chose to use such a small swap partition); I guess it all depends on what you plan to do with your machine. All the best!
