In this Q&A, Erlang creator Joe Armstrong talks about its beginnings as a control program for a telephone exchange, its flexibility and its modern day usage in open source programs. 'In the Erlang world we have over twenty years of experience with designing and implementing parallel algorithms. What we lose in sequential processing speed we win back in parallel performance and fault-tolerance,' Armstrong said. He also mentions how multi-core processors pushed the development of Erlang and the advantages of hot swapping."

Slatterz writes: Come next week, Microsoft will be in the unusual position of no longer offering mainstream support for its most widely used product. Windows XP will pass another milestone on the road to retirement next week when Microsoft withdraws mainstream support for the operating system. Mainstream support for XP will end on 14 April 2009, over seven years after the operating system originally shipped. While the company said that it will continue to provide free security fixes for XP until 2014, any future bugs found in the platform will not be fixed unless customers pay for additional support. Windows XP accounts for about 63 per cent of all internet connected computers, according to March 2009 statistics from Hitslink, while Windows Vista makes up about 24 per cent.

jcatcw writes: David Short, an IBM consultant who works in the Global Services Divison and has been beta testing Vista for two years, says users should consider 4GB of RAM if they really want optimum Vista performance. With Vista's minimum requirement of 512MB of RAM, Vista will deliver performance that's 'sub-XP,' he says. (Dell and others recommend 2GB.) One reason: SuperFetch, which fetches applications and data, and feeds them into RAM to make them accessible more quickly. With more RAM, there's more caching.

I've been using Bacula to backup servers at my agency (300GB+ of data) for the past year and a half. I've found it to be very reliable, flexible, and relatively easy to configure and use. I use an older version (1.36), packaged for sarge, which lacks some features I would like - migrating backups between volumes, ssl support. However, version 2.0 has just been released, and looks like it's got some sweet new features (my wishlist features included). It even runs on windows (in addition to *nix), if you swing that way. http://www.bacula.org/about/press/presskit200.html .en
