IBM tried to kill Windows so people would use OS/2. Microsoft took a huge risk by taking on IBM. I've tried using Linux for years, and it's still a terrible user experience. Any modification of your hardware is horrible. Windows usually picks up the change and just works. Linux is much better than it used to be, but it still can't compare to the setup experience of Windows.
