Comment Why stop with TikTok (Score 0) 80

If the fear of state actors using a social media platform to influence elections is going to be put forward as a justification for a ban, then Facebook and Twitter and Instagram need to be banned as well since it's a tired old saw at this point that state-backed Russian groups have been using those platforms to influence US politics since their creations. I wonder what the difference between those social media platforms and TikTok is. Hmm.

If only Facebook had an acquisition that could have competed with TikTok in the short viral video space. Maybe even some subsidiary that had created and pioneered that media space. Some service that did wxactly what TikTok does, that wasn't bought and then murdered. Oh well. No sense in Vine-ing over what could have been.

The short Steamboat Willie becomes public domain. Mickey Mouse does not. In addition, Mickey Mouse will still be a trademarked property of The Walt Disney Corporation and will not be available for open use like the author seems to think it will be. That said, I'm sure Disney is biding their time waiting for a republican-led congress after the midterms to start lobbying for another copyright extension.

So, Microsoft says that the code to bring back context menus, letting you move the start menu around, and a repositionable task bar would be far too complex to port from Windows 10 to 11, but a full rewrite of Sound Recorder was within the abilities of the dev team? Why won't they just be honest with us and with themselves, and just admit they really really want to be Apple, and are forcing the Apple dock and Apple style menus on us as a result?

Comment A heralding of heritage parts? (Score 1) 120

The way Honda is behaving here makes me wonder if they are going to start up a heritage parts service like Nissan, Toyota and Mazda have. Which would be great except a heritage parts service is going to be far less than profitable, and probably only target a few high-profile models. The people who are 3-D printing parts on the other hand, are probably printing parts for unloved and forgotten models which have no parts support anymore. For example, I can't imagine Honda including, say, the Acura Vigor in any heritage parts plan, and drivers of those cars are going to have a horrendous time finding plastic interior parts that have become brittle and deteriorated over the intervening 30 years. Overall, this is a fairly anti-consumer move for Honda, but I can't say its not a good look for them because most drivers, who replace their car regularly, aren't going to be part of the tiny world of drivers who print long-discontinued plastic parts.

There's no such thing as a "dream job". Twitch streaming on the surface looks ideal because it's got no boss, no managers, no performance reviews and no coworkers looking to stab you in the back for no obvious gain to themselves. But you become a slave to the algorithm, have to please fickle and facetious viewers on who's subscriptions and donations you depend, You must spend all day every day streaming, and any vacation means that viewer counts, viewer engagement goes down, which means fewer eyeballs on Twitch, and Twitch punishes you by decreasing monetization. Twitch forces you to become a capitalist, and since you are your own workforce, you must exploit yourself into terminal burnout.
