in the past people went to the cineplex and decided on the spot what to see. in the post-pandemic world people only visit a cinema if it's showing something they want to explicitly see and cannot get from streaming, ie the consequence is proliferation of "universes", reboots, and franchises that can still get such traction.
maybe the situation will improve with the unavoidable enshitification and fragmentation of the streaming business...
