New Gears of War Mode Announced 31

In an update downloadable on April 9th, the newest multiplayer mode for the Xbox 360 hit Gears of War will be made available. Called Annex, the mode is an objective-capturing gameplay scenario. Each map will have physical locations which must be taken and held, and allows for infinite respawns on a fifteen second timer. "On the map, a projected ring marks the physical location and boundaries of the objective in the world. The ring's color indicates the current captor: White means neutral, blue COG, and red Locust. To capture an objective, players must stand inside the glowing ring uncontested for a short period of time. How long depends on how many teammates stand in the ring at once. One player can capture an objective in eight seconds, two players in four seconds, three players in two seconds, and four players in one second. Once a team takes an objective, they are not required to remain inside the ring to maintain ownership."

Comment Reading off screen (Score 1) 491

Maybe it's just me, but I find reading long articles off the screen cumbersome and inconvinient. I often print out anything longer than 3 pages, especially if it's something I really need to understand.

I would certainly hate it if all my (college) textbooks were pdfs and I had to pour over them off a monitor.

Maybe it's just habit or inertia, but I don't think I'd be able to study off a computer screen.

While surfing on Toms Hardware, I saw Asus's WiFi@Home campaign. Seems ideal and easy to setup for home users, most of whom dont have more than 11Mbps bandwidth coming in. After looking at how many issues Star Wars Galaxies has, I was just wondering about what it takes to setup a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. Specifically, I'm wondering about how an MMORPG would do if it was open source. It would be great if I could get some suggestions/thoughts about how an open source MMORPG would do. Would it attract lots of people (it being free)? How long would it take to set up such a system, writing the game from ground up or using existing open source
